Anand Gandhi, the creative director and producer of Tumbbad, was unimpressed by Kantara. With his opinion on the Rishab Shetty-starring movie, the director generated much controversy on Twitter. He said, “Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad. My idea behind Tumbbad was to use the horror as an allegory of toxic masculinity and parochialism. Kantara is a celebration of these.” Many people responded to the tweet with strong feelings, including Vasan Bala.

Twitter was divided by this claim. On the social networking platform, some people supported Tumbbad while others supported the Kannada movie. A user wrote, “Kantara depicts the journey from debauchery to enlightenment, the nativism playing an enabling role. Tumbbad is the exact opposite- a glorification of debauchery and stereotyping of the natives. You’re right – Kantara is nothing like Tumbbad.”

Filmmaker and director gives reply to users

Filmmaker replied, “Your perspective is making me think. Thank you for sharing it.” Another user asked, “So what is wrong with masculinity?” The director replied, “Nothing wrong with masculinity. When violence, predation, and bullying are privileged as the celebratory aspects of masculinity or for that matter humanity, that cognisance is necessary.” When a supporter stated that he was unaware of the “beef” between Vasan and Anand, filmmaker replied, “No Beef as such.”

Many people across the nation have given Kantara high appreciation. In addition to gaining fans in Karnataka, the Rishab Shetty starrer attracted viewers from non-Kannada-speaking regions, bringing in over Rs 400 crore. Tumbbad, on the other hand, was released in 2018 and received favourable reviews from viewers despite not performing as well as expected at the box office.
