Sukhee Movie Review: Shilpa Shetty is making her comeback on big screens with his film that focuses on the lives of housewives. There are many best things about this film and we’ll highlight them today. Also, we will tell you about some lacking things in the movies. The film revolves around Sukhpreet Kalra, alias Sukhee (Shilpa Shetty Kundra), a devout middle-class Punjabi housewife in her forties, who is going through an existential crisis. A school reunion invitation jolts her out of her stupor.
Performances
Shilpa Shetty Kundra is ideal for this character, reminding you why she was cast in Life in a Metro, Phir Milenge, and other films. Despite her sexy movie persona, she readily slips into the mind of a middle-class housewife. She even gets a makeover with Baazigar’s ‘bangs’ to show off her younger self. The 90’s clothes do a good job of paying homage to Govinda, although the de-aging is a little extreme. Chaitannya Choudhry, who plays the husband, and Maahi Jain, who plays the daughter, both play flawed characters well.
Review
Sukhee recalls her carefree life as a teenager in Delhi when she was adored for who she was as a woman rather than being required merely to serve others and complete her obligations as a mother and wife. Finally, a desi film about female friendship and desire that isn’t about sex exists. Just for this, director Sonal Joshi deserves appreciation. Her narrative resonates because it reflects the inner conflict of practically every middle-class housewife who marries young and sacrifices her goals for love. Years of putting others’ needs ahead of your own do not gain you respect.
You are needed, but are you valued? Women are traditionally encouraged to be happy within this sphere of self-sacrifice since it makes for an ideal bahu, bhabhi, or beti. Sukhee forces you to look inwardly as she decides to break away from the restraints of her home life and explore her past, much to the chagrin of her daughter and husband, who label her as selfish.
What not works
Sukhee seemed to be promising until things went comic and off course. Expect meaningless potty humour and gags that go flat. When the action travels to Delhi, the story switches gears and loses your attention. Scenes and dialogue loop in circles, and everyone continues repeating themselves. When you hear it once, “Sukhee naam wale kabhi dukhi nahi hotay” sounds nice. Overkill is exhausting. If the other characters weren’t basically Sukhee cheerleaders, the girl gang theme would have worked. The other females (Kusha Kapila, Dilnaz Irani, Pavleen Gujral) don’t have much to do, but they all have a good screen presence. Despite having a brilliant performer, the Amit Sadh love story is the film’s weakest link. It is completely ineffective.
